Maplewood
WHY BUY IN MAPLEWOOD?
Somewhere in the experience of each of us, or in our own collective memory, there is a “village,” and embedded in that memory is a magical place of gathered lives that dares to promise a special state of being, an amalgam of a Norman Rockwell painting and a Frank Capra movie, with all the constituent parts of a proper town, and that town is Maplewood, New Jersey: 23, 000 residents at last count, with a four block downtown, solid and unpretentious but inexpressibly picturesque, where the chief pleasures are in the small things, such as the family owned shops on the town square that include an old- fashioned Irish pub, a pet store, a children’s shoe store, and a 50’s diner with the marble-topped soda fountain and twirly stools, where straws come in paper wrappers and newcomers and long-time residents meet and talk without feeling self-conscious.
Close by – some within walking distance – are several appealing neighborhoods with a plethora of affordable homes ranging in price from $300,000 to over $1,000,000; neat wooden-framed houses with cupolas and gables, and great gracious Tudors and Colonials with cool porches that sit on broad leafy streets that are lined with ancient trees. Bordering the 4-square mile township is a recreational preserve, over 2000 alluring acres threaded with foot trails, where hikers and families can picnic by free-flowing streams. Closer to town is an award-winning outdoor pool and several parks that are green and fresh, all of them filled with jogging paths, slides and swings and other amusements, some holding meticulously groomed soccer fields and baseball diamonds, home to little leaguers and softball teams. Nearby are six elementary schools, two middle schools, and Columbia High School, a school which has been consistently singled out for its academic excellence and one that offers a wide array of classes and extra-curricular activities – from journalism to film making to 23 varsity sports – along with advanced placement and college prep classes, and vocational courses.
Maplewood is only 30 minutes from Manhattan by train and is governed by a township committee, consisting of five men and women, and a mayor.
