Summit

WHY LIVE IN SUMMIT?

Surrounded by low wooded hills that give it a kind of muted beauty, there may not be a prettier or friendlier place to live in Northern New Jersey than Summit, a township whose singular appeal will take you by surprise as you drive through the quiet neighborhoods of big old-fashioned single-family homes, splendid Tudors and Colonials, with front porches (so large that you could ride a bike around) and graceful trees, spruces and maples and elms that both paint the landscape with fall colors and decorate the wide sloping lawns.

Most of the neighborhoods are close to the parks and woodlands and just a couple of minutes from town, a handsome, uncommonly cheerful collection of square-topped brick buildings on Springfield Avenue, mostly family owned stores and restaurants that include, along with the necessary Starbucks, several charming boutiques and a timeless café with a soda fountain that you just don’t see anymore. Conveniently located nearby is the train station, which is linked to midtown Manhattan – a thirty-minute ride – by New Jersey Transit.

Along with the prestigious Overlook Hospital, one of the state’s top medical facilities, and Charter Behavior Health System of New Jersey, a substance rehabilitation and psychiatric center, Summit also has, within a ten-mile radius, a prominent burn center and a pioneering heart institute.

Summit is also renowned for its distinguished educational system, one that includes five public elementary schools, one middle school and one high school that is regularly singled out for its overall academic excellence. There are also three private schools located here, and the Summit Child Care Center, one of the oldest and most acclaimed day-care centers in the country.

Recreation opportunities are boundless. Along with hiking and picnicking in the South Mountain Reservation, there are five city parks and a nine-hole golf course, along with the YMCA and YWCA, which both offer a wide array of activities, including swimming, an indoor track, and year-round after-school programs.
