If you’ve ever wondered what life might have been like in the old Soviet Union, you should have stopped by the huge 75% off sale at Whole Foods Market. Just like a Gucci Sample Sale, there were tons of shoppers lined up in front of the store fighting off the cold and dreaming of organic produce and large quantities of wasabi peanuts.

Once inside, people seemed to loose complete touch with reality. I think “hoarding” is the right word for it. Locals were literally buying as much food as they could fit in their carts. Let me rephrase that. Locals were literally buying as much food as they could fit in their Porsche Cheyennes.

I especially enjoyed watching townies grab items that they would never eat — not even for free. Not even if you paid them. But for 75% off they were going in their carts.

The whole scene was like a twisted reality show.

As I was trying levitate out of the spice isle, I ran into a woman who was staring down the label of a dark brown bottle as if it had floated down from space. She was focusing on it so hard — I thought it was going to catch fire. I didn’t wait to see what was going to happen — I got myself together and moved on to the meat isle.

Once there, I grabbed five whole chickens and four pounds of ground pork. Ground pork??????????? I won’t get into it. I’ll eat it — trust me.

So, my cart was just about full and I was ready to check-out. Easier said than done. The lines for the cashier looped around the entire store. They ran thirty or forty people deep.

No big deal. I took my place in the back by the deli counter and patiently waited for an hour and a half until it was my turn to cash in.

And cash in I did.

I have to say one thing — and I really mean it. I’m not sure if everyone shopping at the store was on same muscle relaxant, but I didn’t hear one person bitch and moan about the line taking too long. It was so refreshing. On a normal day, tight faced residents would be barking up a storm if the line was more than two people deep.

Sorry. I’ve got to go and eat my lunch. Dried papaya, rice crackers and a kelp shake.

The fact is, however, that there are many homes priced under a million dollars, not everyone in town drives a luxury car and not all small dogs in Short Hills wear Hermes. My Bichon Gigi wears Escada.

Come on. Don’t get bent out of shape. We bought it at an outlet store.

One of the best areas to find a home priced under a million dollars is the Glenwood Section of Short Hills. It’s a great area positioned very close to the Short Hills Train Station. Of course, you can’t expect to pick up a massive estate for $800,000, but you might just be able to find a nice colonial on a quiet street within a couple of blocks of excellent Thai & Italian Food.

Recent sales in the Glenwood Section have ranged from around $600,000 to $999,000 — making this a very area a very popular area for first time home buyers. You might be able to get a larger home elsewhere — but few towns compare to Short Hills when you look at the fundamentals. So what are you waiting for.

As I am sure you already know, buying a home in Short Hills is a MAJOR investment decision. Dropping a million plus on a home shouldn’t be taken lightly. There are hundreds of Real Estate Agents in the Short Hills area, so finding one shouldn’t be a problem. The question is, how well do they know the market?

The Short Hills real estate market is an anomaly of sorts. You will not find a real estate bubble currently hovering over Short Hills. This is one of many reasons that you should choose a Realtor® from the Short Hills area who can guide you into making a sound financial decision. Would you hire a plastic surgeon to do open heart surgery? I think not.

Here are some things to consider when aligning yourself with a Short Hills Realtor®.

1. Do they, or have they ever lived in Short Hills.

2. Are they a heavy listing agent? Do you want to be represented by an agent who handles a lot of sellers?

3. How is the prospective agent’s reputation with past clients and other Realtors®? This is extremely important. You want a Short Hills real estate agent who is loved by both past clients and other agents.

4. Is the agent tech savvy? All agents say yes to this question, but when you get down and dirty — most know very little beyond picking up their email.

5. Do you Jive with the prospective agent. This is a visceral but important decision.

6. Will the agent require you to sign a buyer agreement? I don’t ask buyers to sign them — and I wouldn’t sign one myself. If a buyer doesn’t like me, they shouldn’t have to work with me.

So move to Short Hills. I think it’s a great decision. I’ve lived here since 1994 and love it.

I find it very interesting that there are so many homes for sale on Hobart Avenue in Short Hills. Perhaps a coincidence. Perhaps a sign.

Short Hills has been largely immune to the market downturn. An anomaly of sorts. On paper the local market is strong — but I have a strange feeling.
